Introduction

The Department of Communication Studies offers the degree of Bachelor of Communication (Honors) in Public Relations and Advertising with three concentrations:

Critical thinking and problem solving

Our faculty members are dedicated to preparing students for life-long learning and active contributions to society. To equip them for this, we have established a sound program of study that cultivates competence in oral, visual, and written communication, develops critical thinking and creative expression, and promotes theoretically informed problem-solving ability for use in a wide variety of applied communication contexts. The efforts of the department, therefore, are aimed toward the goals of providing a rigorous foundation in knowledge about the process, structure and effects of communication and developing thoughtful, articulate, and innovative leaders for Hong Kong, mainland China and the Asian Pacific region.

Data analytics and artificial intelligence

We aim to produce graduates with a strong ability to harness the latest technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence and data analytics, to better understand and communicate with internal and external stakeholders. To this end, our department offers a structured pathway of courses in programming, data analytics, and data visualization taught by instructors who specialize in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital media production. Furthermore, our department engages with industry leaders and practitioners to share optimal strategies in data analytics and artificial intelligence applications in professional communication. These learning opportunities help ensure our students stay ahead of the technological transformations in the communication field.

Admissions

Admissions to the Department’s concentrations are highly competitive. Because English is the primary language of instruction for most of our subjects, the language requirements in the School of Communication are among the most stringent in the Hong Kong Baptist University. Applicants for the degree course in Communication (all Departmental options) must satisfy general University requirements as well as the special requirements of the School of Communication.

These are the minimal requirements, but do not guarantee acceptance to the Course. Both sets of requirements are described below:
