A groundbreaking exhibition titled "Is Climate Change a Genuine Phenomenon?" has opened to the public at the Koo Ming Kown Exhibition Gallery, located on the ground floor of the Communication and Visual Arts Building at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). The exhibition, organized by Professor Stephanie Jean Tsang, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies, aims to address widespread misconceptions about climate change and will run from May 9 to May 22.
Climate change remains a pressing global issue, but misinformation obscures public understanding. According to a survey conducted in late 2024 by Dr. Tsang, 35% of respondents in Hong Kong consider climate change misinformation a "serious" or "very serious" challenge. However, the same study revealed that nearly 25% of respondents hold misconceptions, such as:
1. The belief that cold waves disprove climate change.
2. The idea that climate change is purely a natural process and unrelated to human activity.
3. A sense of fatalism, with some believing that humanity has already missed the chance to address climate disasters and should continue burning fossil fuels.
In response to these misconceptions, the exhibition provides visitors with scientific insights and fact-based analysis to help separate myth from reality. Exploring topics such as the difference between weather and climate, the implications of a "once-in-a-century" rainstorm, and the status of Antarctic sea ice, attendees can deepen their understanding of the facts related to climate change.
