HEWETT, Gareth

Gareth spent a decade as a general and then financial journalist in the UK and Hong Kong, including six years with the South China Morning Post, before moving into a public relations career of almost 30 years in Hong Kong. He worked at HSBC Group for 21 years and at Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China for six years and has taught on the Master’s Introduction to Media Management course at the School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University. He is currently a senior advisor at Paradigm Consulting in Hong Kong, focusing on PR strategy, financial communications and crisis management.

Over his career, Gareth has led a wide spectrum of PR work, from campaigns to crisis management during events such as the 1997–1998 Asian financial turmoil, SARS, the 2008 global financial crisis and COVID‑19. Reflecting his own advice to students, he continues to learn and to ask questions, with a particular interest in how AI is transforming media, public relations and strategic communications.
